God has posted His traffic signs everywhere we look – in the universe, in the Bible, even within our own hearts. Yet we persist in disregarding His directions. Jonah ran as fast and as far as he could away from God and from what God wanted him to do. But running away from God and what He wants us to do cannot be done. Jonah discovered that. God’s presence extends everywhere. Yes, God gives us freedom to slip away from Him for awhile, but then He pursues us. He wants us to follow Him. And no matter how far we run, God loves us and wants to bring us back. Have you strayed off course? Have you wandered away from God? Do you wonder if God still loves you? Rest assured, God wants you back. Join us for this sermon series on Jonah and we will explore lessons about God’s relentless love for us.

It was ten years ago when Jeff Boersma, planter of On the House Church (CRC) was first introduced to the style of coaching practiced by CoachNet’s Bob Logan. Jeff described this coaching style in terms of the mentor asking a lot of questions and encouraging his disciple to listen to the Holy Spirit. This technique assumes that the disciple is an expert in his own life and context and depends on his mentor for guidance on the process of Spirit-led discovery. Four years ago, his conviction to practice this method was deepened when he began peer coaching with Randy Weener, Wyoming KEZ co-Leader and Classis Leader of South Grand Rapids (RCA).

Likewise, Rodger Price, Coordinator of Leader Renewal and Networks, and Vicky Menning, Coordinator of Church Health and Coaching, obtained their CoachNet certification under Bob Logan. Since 2006, they have developed the “Foundations of Coaching” management system that has become a standard tool for both the RCA and CRCNA. This system has been successfully mentoring church leaders and certifying others to be mentors and trainers of coaches in their own right.

Last month the CMI Implementation Team agreed to contract Gary Reinecke, Executive Director of InFocus (www.infocusnet.org), to conduct an advanced coach training workshop for representatives of each KEZ. “Coaching Church Planters and Parent Churches” focuses on a train-the-trainer process so that trainers will be specifically equipped to train church planter and parent church coaches. The goal is to establish a self-sustaining system that will equip 3-4 trainer per KEZ (i.e. one representative per denomination as well as a potential of one thnic leader). The workshop is scheduled for March 26-28, 2012 in Phoenix, AZ.

Excellent coaching of church planters and parent churches will fuel the support, equipping, and empowerment aspect of a church multiplication movement. In order to train excellent coaches for that task, there are four key training components that will be of great value to coaches, those being coached, and the movement as a whole.

Foundations of Coaching: Prior to applying coaching concepts to any particular contextual situation, students must be able to apply the basic coaching skills in a coached relationship and understand best practices in coaching. This training focuses on content-neutral coaching, In this kind of coaching, the one being coached brings the agenda to the relationship, while the coach listens, and asks powerful questions that will help the one being coached discern and pursue a God-given direction. Although coaching planters and parents churches require content-rich coaching, this component plants key principles that are necessary in all other coaching contexts.

Coaching Planters: Best practice suggests that church planters do not need what is called content-neutral coaching, but rather content-rich coaching. A good understanding of the Church Planting process, and landmines to avoid can help a coach ask specific questions in regards to these areas to help a church planter find God’s path for planting a church.

Coaching Parent Churches: Like coaching planters, parent church coaching is best done through content-rich coaching. If a Church has not parented in the past, or has never parented before, a coach can help that congregation navigate a process for parenting churches, and to avoid landmines that are common amongst parent churches.

Training Trainers: Ultimately, in order for multiplication of Parent Churches and Church Planters to occur, there must also be the ability to multiply coaches. This last component develops people who can develop more coaches who can develop more coaches.

Mike Hayes, a member of the SF-Sacto KEZ leadership team and Executive Pastor of City Church of San Francisco (RCA), describes Gary’s coaching approach as goal-focused. Mike appreciates the fact that more people in each denomination will be trained as coaches and trainers in the specialized area of church planting and parenting.
